Diet and Memory Loss
Shannon King, Charity Director

Creating a happy, healthy, and productive lifestyle is something that we all want for ourselves and our loved ones. One of the most precious gifts that we have is our mind. We all experience some memory loss now and then. As we get older age is a big factor in the deterioration of our memory but it’s not the only cause. Like other parts of our health, diet plays an important role. Knowing what foods to eat and which ones to avoid contribute to our brain health as well. Some foods and drinks play an important role in boosting our memory but others may also be responsible for causing memory loss.

Researchers have discovered that consuming a diet high in saturated fats and cholesterol can lead to the impairment of memory. A poor diet can cause inflammation in the brain which is associated with memory loss issues. Let’s review some foods that may cause memory loss.

Alcohol – Limit the consumption of alcohol due to its depressant property. Alcohol slows down your reaction time and interferes with the thought processes. Information recently published by Brown University Health Services shows that women are more at risk than men to suffer the negative effects than men. A woman’s body metabolizes alcohol more slowly than men’s resulting in higher blood alcohol levels leading to impaired judgement and mental confusion.

Aspartame – This artificial sweetener is found in many food products and most recognizably in soda drinks. It has been under attack for many years for reports that it is related to memory problems. Doctors who study aspartame know that it breaks down into unhealthy components and believe that issues with memory loss arrive with heavy usage.

Processed Cheese – Processed cheeses like some cheese sticks, Cheez Whiz, and American cheese may cause proteins to build up in the body, which is a problem associated with Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sugar – White foods made with white sugar such as pasta, white rice, white bread, cakes, have been shown to cause insulin spikes that send toxins to the brain. These spikes are followed by a sudden drop in blood sugar levels. It may help to understand that the body quickly metabolizes foods that contain refined white sugar and bleached white flour. This causes blood sugar to spike, then drop. High levels of glucose in the blood can cause damage to brain cells, leading to memory loss and a risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is key to our overall health. It’s important to limit foods high in fats and cholesterol like meats and high fat dairy. Limit alcohol and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, which are high-fiber carbohydrates. The body absorbs these carbohydrates better and raises blood glucose levels slowly. Limiting or removing these items from your diet not only helps your memory but will assist you in maintaining a healthy weight and an overall feeling of happiness and well being.
